The first 5% of weight loss offers the best health benefits
If you’re struggling with being overweight, it might feel like you have to radically overhaul your entire body and lose all your excess weight to get healthier, but that’s not the case at all, according to a new study.
The current guidelines for weight loss recommend a 5-10 % loss in bodyweight if you want to improve your health. But until now, there has been little research into the effects of losing 5% rather than 10%, which is tougher to achieve.
Studies have shown that losing just 5% of your body weight can bring substantial improvements in health, through the better control of insulin in the liver, fat and muscle tissues, and you don’t need to look like a skinny supermodel to reap the benefits.
From lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and Type 2 Diabetes symptoms, to relieving depression, losing weight has many health boosting benefits for a healthier you.
Lose 2.3kg Lower Cholesterol
Cholesterol is a type of fat in your blood which your body needs for your cells to function properly. But you also get cholesterol from the foods you eat. If your body makes too much or you eat foods that raise your cholesterol levels, it starts to build up in your arteries, which can lead to a heart attack or stroke.
By losing just 2.3 – 4.5kg body weight you can lower the cholesterol levels in your body
Lose 2.5kg Relieve Depression
Studies have shown that there is a strong link between being overweight and depression. The research enrolled 200 women who struggled with both depression and weight issues into programs focusing on depression therapy and weight loss.
The results showed that 38% of women experienced improved mental health when losing at least 2.5kg.
Lose 5kg Lower Blood Pressure
High blood pressure can be caused by weight, diet, age or genetics and can have a similar affect on the body as cholesterol.
Losing 5kg, a healthy diet, controlling salt intake and increasing physical activity can lower your blood pressure.
Lose 6.5kg Lower Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 Diabetes occurs when your body does not respond correctly to insulin and the blood sugar doesn’t reach the cells to be stored for energy. People who are overweight are more likely to have insulin resistance because fat can interfere with the body’s ability to use insulin. Diabetes also increases your risk of heart disease.
Studies have shown that losing 6.5kg can reverse Type 2 Diabetes symptoms and improve your health.
Lose 7kg Restore Ovulation
Research has shown that overweight women are 43% less likely to achieve pregnancy than normal-weight women.
Weight loss of 7kg has shown to restore ovulation.
Lose 10kg Reduce your risk of Breast Cancer
Women’s risk of breast cancer increases after menopause. Before menopause your ovaries produce most of your estrogen, and your fat tissue produces a small amount of estrogen. After menopause, your ovaries stop making estrogen and most would come from fat tissue. Having more fat tissue increases your chances of getting breast cancer as more fat tissue means higher estrogen levels.
Studies have shown that women who lost 10kg or more after menopause reduce their risk of breast cancer by 56%
